The most glamorous part of the translation space is the work we do for TV and the web. I guess I have to admit, that backstage behind the set curtain, it isn’t all that glitzy. But it is always interesting, mostly because it requires a lot of skill and preparation to make sure we get it right on the first take.
Our corporate clients have to really rely on us to get it right, since even when they have their own production facilities, they may not have that much experience working in multiple languages. And when high production costs meet tight budgets, creativity is definitely required.

Remember Secretary Clinton’s gag gift to the Russians? The reset button mistranslated into “overcharge?” Well, some newshound pressed “reset” on the internet news cycle, so now the story is back, and just at the gets to the best part of every “Translation Gone Bad” story, the part when the editor gets thrown under the bus.

The whole idea was done by Secretary Clinton’s personal staff under the leadership of Phillippe Reines, a trusted, long-time advisor. At the beginning of the week, fingers were pointed at a guy named “McFaul.,” which is a great name for a fall guy, but despite that, they couldn’t make it stick.

Our decision to become ISO 9001-certified was not reached lightly. Hours of review and planning, careful cost-benefit analysis, integration with corporate strategy, all those elements were not sufficient to reach that decision. Our clients made us do it. Actually just one.
They offered guidance and encouragement, but pithy and to the point. “Either get certified, or get fired.”
So to yet again butcher a quote from Boswell’s Life of Johnson, “Depend upon it, sir, when a vendor knows he is to lose his client in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”
But (and now I am completely serious) I think it’s the smartest move we ever made as a company.
